2011 - CRFL Grants / 2011-F-001: DMF, CSMA Striper Harvest & Discards

2011-F-001: DMF, CSMA Striper Harvest & Discards

CRFL Grant Request: $332,480   (JOB 1: YR 1 $100,418 / YR2 $99,918)
            (JOB 2: YR1 $69,172 / YR2 $62,972)

Project Title: Improving estimates of striped bass discards in the Central Southern Management Area (CSMA) through a recreational access site survey and expanded observer program.

Project Administrator: DMF, Katy West & Doug Mumford

Project Description:
Job 1 Recreational Access Site Creel Survey Objective: A recreational survey will be conducted in the CSMA to obtain striped bass catch rates (harvest and discard), overall species composition, size distribution, fishing location, fishing method, fishing effort, and socioeconomic data. This survey will provide key data on which to base fishery management decisions that optimize the likelihood of stock recovery. Socio-economic data collected in the surveys will be used to demonstrate economic impacts from the recreational fishery within the CSMA.
Job 2 Observer Coverage Objective: The objectives of this job are to expand upon existing observer coverage and collect effort, catch, and bycatch data for striped bass and other recreationally important and protected species (e.g. red drum, southern flounder, spotted seatrout, American shad, striped mullet, Atlantic sturgeon, and sea turtles) from North Carolina large mesh gill net fisheries in the Pamlico, Pungo, and Neuse rivers. Using data from the NCDMF Trip Ticket and fisheries-independent assessment programs, we will focus our efforts on gears and areas where striped bass interactions are known to frequently occur. The goal of this program is for each observer to participate in 104 trips/year (2 trips/week on average) in the CSMA large mesh gill net fishery. This will result in approximately 6% observer coverage each year in the sampling area.
